Middle-earth is the setting for most of the stories by British writer J. R. R. Tolkien. The term comes from the translation of Middle English middel-erde, derived from Old English middangeard. Tolkien explicitly describes it as our Earth, in a distant past that is not claimed to be real, as the author clearly states its fictional nature. He places the end of the Third Age approximately 6,000 years before our time.
The history of Middle-earth is divided into several "Ages." The novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings take place at the end of the Third Age of the Sun, while The Silmarillion recounts the creation of the World and primarily deals with the events of the First Age.
