On March 25, 2026, Tolkien Reading Day, Peter Jackson unveiled a new, unreleased film in the Lord of the Rings universe: The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past. This announcement via a Warner Bros video on X marks an ambitious return to Middle-earth, produced by Jackson himself.
Synopsis of Shadows of the Past
Fourteen years after Frodo's death, Sam, Merry, and Pippin retrace the origins of their quest. Elanor, Sam's daughter, uncovers a secret explaining why the War of the Ring almost failed from the start.
This never-before-seen cinematic story is inspired by chapters 3 and 4 of The Fellowship of the Ring : the Shire, the Barrow-downs, capture by the Barrow-wights, and rescue by Tom Bombadil.
Creative team behind the project
Stephen Colbert, a fervent Tolkien fan and host of the Late Show, co-writes the screenplay with his son. Peter Jackson produces, faithful to the spirit of the original trilogies with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens in support.
Release is scheduled for late 2027, with a potentially horrific tone for the dark passages of the Barrows.
