New bomb for the Tolkien universe in 2025
It's official: Warner Bros' new installment in the Lord of the Rings saga, titled The Hunt for Gollum, will feature Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Gandalf (Ian McKellen) in its cast. This announcement, made at a convention in London in August 2025, immediately set the Tolkien fan community ablaze.
A legendary cast for an untold story
At the "For the Love of Fantasy" event, Ian McKellen revealed the presence of the two iconic heroes:
"There's a character in the film called Frodo and another called Gandalf. Apart from that, my lips are sealed!"
Even though the actors have not yet confirmed signing on to reprise their legendary roles, the presence of Elijah Wood on stage, surrounded by McKellen and other members of the original cast, leaves little room for doubt.
The Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis (the unforgettable Gollum), will tell the story of Sméagol/Gollum's hunt between Bilbo and the formation of the Fellowship of the Ring, while Gandalf and Aragorn go after him.
A production tailored for fans
Produced by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, this new film promises to revive the epic spirit and visual dimension that made the trilogy so successful.
Its release is already scheduled for December 2027, with filming set to begin next May in New Zealand.
Why this return is a major pop culture event?
The reunion of Frodo and Gandalf sparks a wave of nostalgia, while opening up new narrative perspectives between pure lore and modernity. It's also a tremendous commercial opportunity to offer new merchandise when the film is released. This comeback brings together all generations of fans and confirms the vitality of the franchise for years to come.
And if you want to join the adventure, don't forget your One Ring, guaranteed free of evil (although...)
The Hunt for Gollum will be released in cinemas in winter 2027
