Jamie Dornan is officially Aragorn: the return of a legendary Ranger
After rumors that set forums ablaze, the confirmation has arrived: Jamie Dornan (seen in Fifty Shades of Grey and The Fall) will play Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. This announcement marks a turning point for the Tolkien saga in cinema, rekindling Middle-earth nostalgia while ushering in a new era centered around a younger, wilder, and more mysterious Aragorn.
For fans of The Lord of the Rings, the name Aragorn immediately brings Viggo Mortensen to mind… but Jamie Dornan could well become the new face of Strider, the Ranger of the Dúnedain, with an aura that is both charismatic and dark.
The Hunt for Gollum : the plot, the director, and returning actors
The film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum (French title: La Traque de Gollum) is set between the Hobbit trilogy and The Fellowship of the Ring. The story follows Gandalf and Aragorn in their hunt for Gollum, to uncover the truth about Bilbo's Ring and the danger it poses to Middle-earth.
At the helm is Andy Serkis, who also reprises his role as Gollum thanks to performance capture. We also find legends of the saga: Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo, complemented by new faces such as Kate Winslet (Marigol) and Leo Woodall (Halvard, a Dúnedain man).
Why this casting is already causing controversy (and especially buzz)
The choice of Jamie Dornan as Aragorn is already dividing the Tolkien community: some fans love his "dark ranger" side, others are still recovering from Viggo Mortensen's legacy. However, Warner Bros. insists that the film is a continuation of the Tolkien universe, with a cast conceived as a blend of legends and new talents.
This role also allows Dornan to step out of his romantic star image and tackle a darker, more isolationist character, directly in line with the spirit of the Rangers of the North. Suffice it to say that fans and the curious will scrupulously analyze each of his scenes when the film is released.
